SEA Index® Becomes First CO2 Assessment Tool to Rate Fuel Cell Technologies on Superyachts

Monaco, NOVEMBER 8, 2024

The Yacht Club de Monaco’s SEA Index®, has completed its most ambitious development to date: expanding the scope of its flagship CO2 certification program to evaluate and rate the energy intensity of all types of fuel cell technologies installed on superyachts.

This development empowers superyacht owners and other stakeholders considering alternative fuel systems by offering a trusted, rigorous evaluation of how these technologies affect a yacht’s environmental footprint.

Designed to increase transparency throughout the sector, SEA Index provides unbiased, independent, data-driven tools to enable yacht owners and stakeholders to assess the environmental impact of their vessel.

With access to impartial environmental data, yachting stakeholders can make informed choices as they transition to cleaner energy sources and more sustainable practices.

Working in collaboration with technical specialists from maritime classification society Lloyd’s Register, SEA Index has undergone a rigorous review to ensure its methodology can now accurately assess superyachts equipped with the latest fuel cell technologies, including both methanol and hydrogen-based systems.

The updated formula and evaluation process, which is based on data from some of the yachting industry’s newest vessels, allows SEA Index to remain at the forefront of environmental stewardship for superyachts.

SEA Index applied this enhanced methodology to rate Sanlorenzo’s new 50Steel Almax superyacht, which achieved a 3-star SEA Index rating for its energy efficiency based on methanol fuel-cell reformer technology.

With this latest advancement, SEA Index continues to set a new standard for sustainability in the superyacht industry, providing a clear unbiased path forward for cleaner and more responsible yachting.

Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index® is an accurate, consistent and unbiased methodology for assessing the environmental impact of yachts over 25 metres.

Launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco, under the aegis of its ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’ initiative, SEA Index® enables superyacht owners to impartially assess the energy efficiency of their yachts and empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions when designing, buying, selling or chartering a vessel.

The SEA Index® CO2 certification process is verified by Lloyd’s Register and has been designed to increase transparency throughout the sector and promote responsible yachting.
