Sanlorenzo Almax 50Steel Secures 3* SEA Index® Rating

Monaco, September 24, 2024

Sanlorenzo’s Almax 50Steel, the world’s first superyacht to feature a Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system, has been awarded a 3* rating by SEA Index®.

On 23rd September 2024, the ship welcomed on board the participants (start-ups, scale-ups, investors, architects and marina developers) of the 4th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina: Rendez-vous for a networking breakfast to celebrate its SEA Index certification and highlight the impact of sustainable technologies on the development of more environmentally friendly yachting sector.

Designed to power the vessel’s on-board hotel systems with zero emissions, the 50Steel’s Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system represents a milestone in technical innovation and was a key factor in the vessel securing a 3* rating on the Superyacht Eco Association’s energy-intensity Index, independently verified by Lloyd’s Register.

“The SEA Index® aims to become the internationally recognised non-biased assessment system for superyachts. With SEA Index® certification we are more dedicated than ever to supporting owners in their energy transition, helping them to always be one step ahead of the rest of the fleet. Deployment of the SEA Index® beyond Monaco is creating a network among the yachting community of those keen to restore a more respectful balance for the ocean”

Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco.

“The Sanlorenzo 50Steel represents an important step on our path towards a more sustainable yachting industry and embodies the passion for challenges that has always guided us. We are adopting ground-breaking solutions to achieve this objective while maintaining our elegant, comfortable lines. Our 2030 roadmap, which is part of our carbon neutrality strategy, is now taking shape and we are keen to bring our new ambitions to fruition. This revolutionary solution allows the yacht to generate up to 100kW of electricity to power all hospitality services around 85% of the time.”

Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo.

Having achieved a 3* rating, the Almax 50Steel now qualifies for a host of benefits as a SEA Index certification holder. Like all vessels achieving a three-star rating or higher, 50Steel will benefit from priority berthing at ports, marinas and harbours in the SEA Index network, as well as discounts at participating marinas and yacht clubs and subsidised sustainability training for crew members at La Belle Classe Academy, the Yacht Club de Monaco’s training centre.
