Promoting Sustainable Yachting on the French Riviera
Part of the Riviera Ports network and managed by the Nice Côte d’Azur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI Nice Côte d’Azur), Port Vauban, Port Gallice, and the Vieux Port of Golfe Juan are renowned for their prime locations, exceptional settings, and high-quality facilities.
With 1,500 berths and the capacity to accommodate yachts up to 150 meters, Port Vauban welcomes superyachts all year round. The growth of the yachting industry is evident in the increasing number of vessels visiting the South of France, which attracts over half of the global fleet of yachts over 30 meters each year.
By deploying the SEA Index®, Riviera Ports will enhance environmental awareness as the yachting industry continues to expand, while building on its “Clean Ports” certification to improve sustainability across all its operations.
“We are delighted to welcome Port Vauban, Port Gallice, and the Vieux Port of Golfe Juan to the SEA Index® network and applaud their commitment to sustainable yachting. Our partnership will increase the SEA Index®’s visibility among yacht owners, captains, and crews, and in turn, contribute to developing more responsible yachting practices,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco and President of the SEA Index®.
“This partnership with the SEA Index® aligns perfectly with the environmental approach we have implemented in the ports we manage, all of which are certified ‘Clean Ports’. By encouraging yacht owners to assess and reduce their carbon footprint, we are strengthening the collective commitment to more environmentally responsible yachting. This initiative complements our vision of responsible and innovative port development,” stated Jean-Pierre Savarino, President of the CCI Nice Côte d’Azur.
About the SEA Index®
The SEA Index® is based on a robust, easy-to-use, and impartial methodology for assessing the environmental impact of yachts over 24 meters. With 842 yachts assessed to date, the SEA Index® is built upon the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) methodologies, adapted specifically for superyachts.
Launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco, under its ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ initiative, the Superyacht Eco Association via the SEA Index® provides yacht owners with an independent assessment of their yachts’ energy efficiency. It enables stakeholders to make informed decisions when designing, purchasing, selling, or chartering a vessel.
The SEA Index CO2 certification process, verified by Lloyd’s Register, was designed to enhance transparency across the industry, promoting more responsible yachting practices.
