SEA Index® & AtmoSud Integrate Air Quality Emissions into Superyacht Sustainability Metrics

Monaco, JULY 8th 2025

In a landmark step toward decarbonising the yachting sector, AtmoSud, the regional air quality observatory for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and the SEA Index ® Superyacht Eco Association, the Monaco-based environmental benchmark for superyachts, have announced a strategic collaboration to develop a robust methodology for measuring and integrating pollutants emissions into the SEA Index certification framework.

The partnership represents a first in the yachting sector through the incorporation into the unbiased SEA Index superyacht environmental rating system particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, two regulated pollutants contributors to marine and coastal air pollution. This joint initiative is set to accelerate transparency and accountability within the superyacht sector and aligns with regional and international ambitions for cleaner oceans.

A Methodology Anchored in Science and Impact

Combining AtmoSud’s scientific expertise in atmospheric monitoring and emissions modeling with SEA Index’s leadership in superyacht sustainability and third-party CO2 certification, the initiative aims to establish a data-driven, scalable methodology tailored to the operational realities of superyachts. The methodology will be designed to account for engine and generator performance, pollution control systems, and real-world usage profiles, ensuring rigorous and actionable environmental assessments.

PM and NOx emissions from superyachts are an underregulated yet critically important factor in local and regional air quality,” said Pierre-Charles MARIA, President of AtmoSud. “By partnering with SEA Index, we are applying the same scientific rigor we bring to public policy and regional monitoring to the superyacht sector — a high-profile industry that can lead by example.

The SEA Index was created to drive measurable change in yachting sustainability,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, President of the SEA Index Superyacht Eco Association. “By integrating air pollutants emissions into our methodologies, we’re elevating our commitment to climate leadership and giving owners, captains, shipyards, and designers a new metric to reduce their environmental footprint.

Charting a Course Toward Regulatory Readiness

This initiative also anticipates forthcoming international maritime regulation and heightened public scrutiny on emissions from high-end vessels. By proactively developing PM and NOx criteria now, AtmoSud and SEA Index aim to provide a credible, pre-compliant pathway for superyacht owners to demonstrate environmental stewardship before regulatory mandates are enforced.

Next Steps

The joint working group started methodology development from june 2025, with a stakeholder consultation phase planned for Q4 2025.

This forward-looking collaboration cements both organisations’ positions at the forefront of yachting sustainability innovation and sets a new benchmark for emissions accountability across the global yachting community.

About ATMOSUD:

AtmoSud, a non-profit organization, is the reference observatory for air quality, climate, and energy in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Approved by the Regional Prefect, it brings together four key stakeholder groups: State services and public institutions, local authorities, industries, and environmental and consumer protection associations, along with qualified individuals and/or healthcare professionals.
The association continuously improves its understanding of air pollutants and air quality. It serves a public interest mission and is structured around two core pillars:

• Ensuring a reference observatory: This pillar allows the organization to maintain a high level of expertise in atmospheric pollution monitoring (metrology) and in data processing algorithms, enabling analysis, forecasting, monitoring, and scenario modelling.

• Fostering stakeholder engagement: This pillar enables the organization to develop services that support local stakeholders in understanding the issues, planning, monitoring activities, informing, raising awareness, and providing training on air quality. This process is strengthened by AtmoSud’s expert role and its transparent, independent, and collegiate governance structure, giving it a key role as an intermediary. In doing so, it contributes to changing behaviors at all levels.

AtmoSud has recognized expertise in atmospheric pollution linked to maritime activities, having participated in numerous European and national research projects on the topic, including:
