M/Y BLEX, certified 5-star CO₂ and 4-star Air Quality SEA Index®: a two-fold achievement

Monaco, october 28th 2026

A 1987-built yacht delivering strong environmental performance

Built in 1987 and refitted in 2015, M/Y BLEX joins the SEA Index® fleet of certified yachts with two particularly high ratings: 5 stars for its CO₂ certification, the highest rating on the scale, and 4 stars for its Air Quality certification.
These two complementary certifications provide a more comprehensive picture of a vessel’s environmental performance, based on specific and independent methodologies. The result is particularly notable for a yacht originally built nearly four decades ago.

M/YBLEX enriches the SEA Index® ecosystem and reflects a shared ambition: to turn environmental assessment into a driver of sustainable transformation for the entire yachting sector.

“I am honoured to be part of the prestigious SEA Index® family. I believe this voluntary initiative is an excellent opportunity for every owner to get to know their yacht better. Seeing a yacht built in 1987 perform so well is a truly remarkable result. The slender hull forms of that era, the efficiency of her completely redesigned propellers and engines with modest power compared to what is installed today on yachts of this size have certainly played their part. In addition, her three generators of different output, together with far fewer onboard consumers than on modern yachts, allow not only greater efficiency but also lower fuel consumption.”

“The SEA Index® was developed to raise awareness and encourage yacht owners to reduce their environmental footprint, with objective measurement providing the foundation for credible progress. M/Y BLEX demonstrates the value of this approach: regardless of a yacht’s age, assessing its performance helps owners understand where they stand and identify opportunities for improvement. By combining complementary certifications, the SEA Index® provides a broader understanding of environmental performance, helping to encourage and recognise progress towards more responsible yachting.”

An ever-expanding approach

2026 marks a significant milestone in the SEA Index®’s journey, with two major developments to its certification framework.

In March, the launch of the Air Quality certification, developed in collaboration with AtmoSud, was added to the longstanding CO₂ certification, covering the assessment of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) emissions.

A few months later, in July, the SEA Index® also extended the scope of its CO₂ certification to include pleasure craft from 10 metres in length, originally designed for yachts over 24 metres. This expansion allows the initiative to be accessible to a wider range of vessels.

Longer term, a third certification focusing on underwater radiated noise will add to this scheme, with the aim of incorporating a new dimension of yachts’ environmental impact linked to submarine noise emissions.

About the SEA Index®

Founded in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco and Credit Suisse (UBS Group), the SEA Index® certification (Superyacht Eco Association) is a pioneering initiative designed to assess and reduce the environmental footprint of vessels. Based on recognized scientific methodologies and supported by independent third-party verification, the SEA Index® brings together a growing network of more than 25 ports partner, primarily in the Mediterranean, as well as in other regions such as the Caribbean and the Seychelles, and 87 marinas members of the Japan Marina & Beach Association.

It stands as one of the key pillars of the collective initiative « Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting », led by the YCM. The initiative aims to establish the Principality as a global benchmark for innovative, sustainable and responsible yachting, while contributing to ocean protection and shaping the future of Yachting.
